Mark Helprin’s original novel had its well-earned fans, but writer-director replaces Helprin’s creative metaphysical musings with cheap sentimentality.

Farrell should never have accepted this role, but, worse, he shouldn’t even have been offered it. He’s at least a decade too old to believably play Peter Lake, an orphan who works for master thief Pearly Soames (Russell Crowe) in turn-of-the-century New York.
When Peter decides to go his own way, he makes an enemy out of Pearly. And it’s worse than he thinks: though Peter doesn’t know it, his city is crowded with angels and demons — Pearly among the latter. Nothing burns him up more than angel-assisted miracles, and Peter is about to find one in 20-year-old Beverly (Jessica Brown Findlay).
