Mark Helprin’s original novel had its well-earned fans, but writer-director replaces Helprin’s creative metaphysical musings with cheap sentimentality.
When Peter decides to go his own way, he makes an enemy out of Pearly. And it’s worse than he thinks: though Peter doesn’t know it, his city is crowded with angels and demons — Pearly among the latter.
